Plain-English pet insurance definitions

Premium

The amount you pay for a policy, often monthly or annually. A lower premium can come with a higher deductible, lower reimbursement, or different limits.

Deductible

The amount you pay before eligible reimbursement applies. Some policies use annual deductibles; others may structure deductibles differently.

Reimbursement rate

The percentage of eligible expenses the provider may reimburse after the deductible, subject to policy terms and limits.

Annual limit

The maximum amount a policy may reimburse during a policy year. Some policies use unlimited annual benefits, while others use caps or benefit schedules.

Waiting period

The time after coverage starts before certain accident, illness, orthopedic, dental, or other benefits may apply.

Pre-existing condition

A symptom, illness, injury, or condition that existed before coverage started or before a waiting period ended. Definitions vary by provider.

Exclusion

A service, condition, charge, or situation the policy does not cover. Exclusions are usually described in the sample policy.

Accident-only coverage

Coverage generally focused on eligible accidental injuries. It may not include illnesses or chronic conditions.

Accident and illness coverage

Coverage generally designed for eligible future accidents and illnesses, subject to waiting periods, exclusions, deductibles, reimbursement rates, and limits.

Wellness plan

A routine-care benefit or add-on that may help with exams, vaccines, preventive care, or similar predictable costs. It is not the same as accident and illness coverage.

Claim

A request for reimbursement or payment under a policy after eligible care. Providers may request invoices, medical records, and other documentation.

Quote

An estimate based on pet, location, policy settings, and provider rules. A quote is not the same as a final policy contract.

Underwriting

The process a provider may use to evaluate eligibility, health history, pricing, or policy terms. Pet insurance underwriting practices vary.

Direct vet pay

A feature where a provider may pay a veterinarian directly in certain situations. Availability, timing, and requirements vary by provider and clinic.

Benefit schedule

A table that sets maximum benefit amounts for certain conditions or services. It can differ from reimbursement based on the actual invoice.

Coinsurance

The share of eligible expenses not reimbursed by the policy. If reimbursement is 80%, the pet owner's coinsurance share is generally 20% before considering exclusions and limits.
